Black tie, decoded: what it actually requires
Black tie is the most codified dress code a modern man will meet, which is precisely why it is the easiest to get right. The rules were settled a century ago. Follow them and you cannot fail; improvise and everyone in the room can tell. Here is the whole uniform, item by item.
The short answer
Black tie means a black or midnight-blue dinner suit with silk lapels, a white marcella-front shirt, a self-tied black bow tie, and polished black shoes. Trousers have a silk side-stripe and are worn with braces, never a belt. A plain dark suit with a long black tie is not black tie.
The dinner suit itself
The foundation is a black or midnight blue dinner suit with silk-faced lapels, either shawl or peak, never notch. Midnight blue is the connoisseur's choice: under artificial light it reads richer and blacker than black, which is why the great tailoring houses have preferred it for generations.
The trousers carry a single silk braid down each leg and are made for braces rather than a belt. No belt loops, no belt, no exceptions. A cummerbund or evening waistcoat covers the waist if the jacket may come off.
The bow tie, and why it must be self-tied
Black tie means a black bow tie, and a self-tie bow is the only version with real character. The slight asymmetry of a hand-tied bow reads as human; the moulded perfection of a clip-on reads as hired. Learn the knot in two evenings in front of a mirror and it is yours for life.
Barathea silk is the classic cloth. Velvet and midnight variants are acceptable flourishes when the invitation says creative black tie; a long black necktie, whatever certain award ceremonies suggest, is not black tie at all.
Shirt, studs and cufflinks
The shirt is white with a marcella or pleated front, a turndown collar, and a double cuff. Wing collars belong with white tie; on a dinner jacket they read as fancy dress. The front fastens with studs if the shirt allows, and the cuffs take cufflinks, ideally something with a little evening light in it.
Mother-of-pearl does quiet, luminous work by candlelight, which is exactly the register black tie rewards.
Shoes, socks and the finishing inch
Black patent oxfords or highly polished black calf, worn with long black socks that never show shin. A white linen or silk pocket square in a plain fold completes the chest.
Wristwear should be a dress watch or nothing; the old rule that a gentleman does not check the time at dinner survives in spirit. Fragrance light, hair tidy, done.
